The children have barely reached the country before they’re digging a hole through the gravel to Australia—and finding a fairy unlike any in a storybook.

After two years in London, Anthea, Cyril, Robert, Jane and the Lamb find the White House a paradise of gardens, woods and places where nobody says “You mustn’t touch.” When their parents are away, a trip to the gravel-pit brings them face to face with an ancient, grumpy sand-fairy—and with wishes that promise to make every day extraordinary. But a wish is not always quite what it seems, and even the best intentions can lead to trouble. What will the children ask for first?
