PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Six Philadelphia teenagers' spring break road trip turns deadly after they get lost in South Carolina in this nail-biting thriller from Jackson (the Good Girls' Guide to Murder series). Redford "Red" Kenny and her friends—siblings Oliver and Maddie Lavoy, Oliver's girlfriend Reyna Flores-Serrano, Arthur Moore, and Simon Yoo—borrow Simon's uncle's RV to road-trip down to Gulf Shores for spring break. The journey is pleasant, if cramped, and the teens pass the time playing card games and drinking. While navigating without cell service to an isolated rural rest stop, they make a wrong turn onto McNair Cemetery Road, where one of their tires blows out. The group is then taken hostage by an unseen sniper, who shoots out the rest of the tires, the gas tank, and a window. Via a walkie-talkie left behind by the perpetrator, the shooter claims that one of them has a secret he wants revealed and warns that "if you try to run, I will shoot." Hints of romance and a hopeful resolution help buoy unrelenting violent action, a tense atmosphere, and a melancholic tone. Reyna is Mexican; Simon's father is Korean; the rest of the cast present as white. Ages 14–up.

4 stars
4.5 stars… this was a quick read, indeed. I took off .5 stars simply because it was sometimes a bit difficult to understand the main characters thought patterns and such.
I also absolutely hated Oliver… the main character’s best friend’s brother. While he started out okay, by the end of the book - I was hoping for his demise lol.
Anyways, I do really like this author and the first two books in the ‘good girls guide to murder’ (I didn’t read the last one yet) and this one. I look forward to reading more by her in the future.
Kinda disappointing
I feel like Oliver’s character was so prominent to the story that I didn’t really care for anyone else since they weren’t as developed. In the end the plot twist was kind of a let down I mean the entire book was Oliver being annoying, Red rambling about something dumb, or just unnecessary dialogue. And it was definitely not worth it for the ending. And leaving a cliff hanger was just soooo meh like the story was already meh and then top it off by having a lame conclusion? And tbh none of the characters were likable, they weren’t horrible but there was nothing given to make you deeply care for them.
A Nail-biting Page Turner
Holly Jackson knows how to weave an intricate plot and setting, and make you want to blow through the book at record speed. Five Survive starts off calm and serene before the tension ramps up quickly, and the chapters alternate between tense and revealing all the way through to the end. I have five of her books already, and I’m sure that count will increase. My only quibble is one character in the main story Is pretty useless, and would have changed nothing had they not even been written into it. See if you can determine which. Highly recommended!
