Flashes of War
Reading this collection of wonderfully poignant short stories about war cover to cover today, only interrupted by the need for a few fresh cups of coffee had not been my intention. I wanted to bite them off one or two at a time, but I could not. Author Katey Schultz wouldn't let me. Katey has constructed and nurtured a collection of characters, circumstances and settings that draw you in gracefully as a smooth dive into calm pool of temperate water. Once you get wet, you stay in and swim around occasionally holding on to the edges feeling that same need of the characters themselves, but easily moving back out to open waters. You get comfortable in the warmth of sometimes disturbing yet very real imagery she creates masterfully, within a genre that requires a grinch's frugality of word counts. I highly commend this book from an extremely talented new writer.
