Footsteps in the Dark

You get all sorts of noises in old houses. The wind can make the window rattle and sound as if someone is trying to break in. The wood and bricks, cooling at different rates, can make little sounds that could be someone stealthily raising a window, millimetre by millimetre.
Now, I was aware that my body was rigid and I was hearing footsteps, like someone walking upstairs…
