An instant New York Times bestseller!
New York Times bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer expands the Cursebreaker world in an electrifying new series.
All's fair in love, war . . . and magic.
When Tycho, the King's Courier, arrives in the remote village of Briarlock, he wants only to escape the demands of his new life in the royal court, where magic reigns for the first time in ages. The last thing he expects is to fall for a handsome blacksmith with a bruised heart.
After years of toil under his father's cruel hand, Jax never dared to dream of a better life. When rumors of a rebellion reach their small forge, he begins to wonder if he'll even survive--until a magic-wielding young lord offers him an enticing escape.
Jax's best friend, Callyn, doesn't trust this mysterious new friend. Magic once killed her parents, and she would do anything to protect Jax. But when another powerful man arrives from the capital, seeking her help, Callyn will be forced to question everything she thought she knew about magic--and herself.
War is brewing. Love is blooming. And magic may doom--or save--them all . . .
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Figuring out what’s right or wrong can be tough for any teenager, but when magic is involved, the stakes are even higher. Wizardry has been banned in the land of Syhl Shallow, so when the new, sorcery-loving king decides to embrace the magical arts, it causes quite a stir. Best friends Callyn and Jax have never questioned the belief that magic is destructive and bad, so they agree to help depose the radical monarch. But what if everything they’ve been taught is a lie? We were totally caught up in the danger and uncertainty faced by Brigid Kemmerer’s teen heroes as they navigate thorny issues of loyalty, morality, and what it really means to think for yourself. Each twist in this sweeping YA fantasy will have you wondering what you would do.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Set after Kemmerer's Cursebreaker books, this captivating series launch finds enemy realms Syhl Shallow and Emberfell united by the marriage of Syhl Shallow's queen to Emberfell's magesmith king. Though magic is now legal in Syhl Shallow, many citizens still distrust it particularly rebel Truthbringers, who are planning regicide to restore the status quo. In the remote Syhl Shallow town of Briarlock, teenage friends Jax and Callyn have little time for such concerns; blacksmith Jax, who lost his foot in an accident, works endlessly to pay his abusive, alcohol-reliant father's debts, and baker Callyn, whose parents were killed by magic, minds her younger sister while trying to keep the family business afloat. When Truthbringers Lady Karyl and Lord Alek offer the teens money to pass sealed messages among their cohort, they accept, figuring the reward outweighs the risk. Then the King's Courier, 19-year-old Tycho, comes to town, searching for traitors. While Kemmerer's latest boasts propulsive, intricate plotting and intimate first-person-present narration by protagonists Jax, Callyn, and Tycho (all of whom cue as white), it's Jax and Tycho's gentle budding romance amid their respective past traumas that truly distinguishes this tale. Characters of varying abilities are featured throughout. Ages 13 up. Agent: Suzie Townsend, New Leaf Literary & Media.
