Publisher Description
A promising young mercenary's future gets thrown into jeopardy after a fateful encounter with an alien in the start to a propulsive space opera series perfect for fans of Firefly and Killjoys.
"Devi is hands-down one of the best sci-fi heroines I've read in a long time." RT Book Reviews
Devi Morris isn't your average mercenary. She has plans. Big ones. And a ton of ambition. It's a combination that's going to get her killed one day -- but not just yet.
That is, until she just gets a job on a tiny trade ship with a nasty reputation for surprises. The Glorious Fool isn't misnamed: it likes to get into trouble, so much so that one year of security work under its captain is equal to five years everywhere else. With odds like that, Devi knows she's found the perfect way to get the jump on the next part of her Plan. But the Fool doesn't give up its secrets without a fight, and one year on this ship might be more than even Devi can handle.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Ambitious career mercenary Devi Morris, believing her advancement stalled in the prestigious Blackbird company, accepts a security position on the notorious trade ship Glorious Fool, a ship so prone to interesting times that one year served there counts as five years served anywhere else. Devi discovers a diverse crew of aliens and humans under a demanding master, and a ship full of secrets worth killing to protect. Swarms of alien slavers and predator-infested derelict ships lost in the depths of space are dangerous enough, but can Devi survive the Glorious Fool herself? All of space opera's conventions make appearances, including violent aliens, mysterious powers, high-tech weaponry, powered armor, sympathetic mercenaries, and feudal societies. What Bach fails to demonstrate is much ability to blend her stock set pieces into a coherent whole or put a new spin on familiar clich s.

Fortune's Pawn Review
A fantastically fun read- especially if you like no-nonsense chicks with big guns and bigger personalities. Well written with a fully conceptualized universe, strong point of view and enough intrigue to pique the curiosity of an army of cats! The heroine is easy to like but still has room for growth, the plot moves along at a great clip, and the otherworldly settings are vivid. Ends with a cliffhanger, but it's the first in a trilogy, so I'm willing to forgive- especially since the other books are already available.
Fast Paced and Enjoyable...
I really enjoyed the pace of the story, the world building and the character of Devi.
Loved the easy way the author got me absorbed into the world, and kept me hooked and engrossed from page 1.
Am totally curious to see what happens next...
