Publisher Description
In 1969 I photographed and met Angela Davis at a Black Panther Free Huey rally in DeFremery Park, Oakland. That iconic photo is the first photo in this portfolio and is Angela’s official portrait in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC.
Angela Davis’ arrest in October, 1970 and subsequent trial was international news. There was no way I was not going to cover Angela Davis’ trial in San Jose. I commuted to the trial in San Jose many times from my home in Berkeley. I was credentialed and worked closely with Earl Caldwell, a New York Times reporter, as well as, other publications.
Bobby Seale and the Panthers introduced me to Angela’s family, her support team, and her lawyers. Their trust allowed me to capture some of the private moments which make this set of photographs unique.
