A Wall Street operator sets out to break the market deliberately, on a Friday the thirteenth, to prove what the system is. Lawson had made and lost fortunes in copper and had just published a series of magazine articles exposing his own trade; the novel is the same charge in fictional form. This edition is bound with a gallery of 56 plates after painters including Bierstadt, Lemmens and Lenbach, alongside one restored and coloured in-text illustration.
