Remarkably for the time, Wood began his career as a Midshipman in the Royal Navy, serving in the Naval Brigade in the Crimean War. He was then commissioned into the Army and saw service in the Sudan War in 1884-85. Wood documents fully both his short naval service and his distinguished military career. This edition of the memoirs includes the two volumes in a single book. Volume 1 covers Wood's family background and spans the period up to 1878.Volume 2 continues from 1878 and ends with his appointment, in 1903, as a Field Marshal.
