In this novel, for young adults through age 90, a young girl comes of age and learns that her beloved father is among the prisoners of the military regime that has taken over her country. She and her eccentric elderly neighbors take matters into their own hands to right things for a group of similarly imprisoned strangers during the annual village festival, all the while hoping someone somewhere does the same for her father. The setting is Chile in the 1970’s, the Pinochet era. Great book for groups, book reports, or just plain good reading. Magic realism, family love, multi-generational relationships combine with suspense and humor against a historical backdrop. …a richly engaging debut novel, a story written for young readers that is equally satisfying as an adult read.
