How much will the McCalls be willing to sacrifice in their pursuit of big gas money-and who will lose it all when the bust comes?

Lew and Johanna McCall are third-generation Oklahomans in the oil industry whose three children want nothing to do with the struggling family business. But in the late 1970s, a new kind of boom looms, in the search for natural gas. Independent wildcatters will explore three miles deep into the central Oklahoma prairies looking for a huge untapped source of energy and the riches it promises.

In the heart of it all, the quest for wealth pits McCall family members against their values and leads them into risky ventures, questionable alliances, and strained relationships. It will take a tragedy to make them question whether the payoff is worth the cost.
