A CNN contributor, former Ted Cruz staffer, and "Never Trump" adherent reveals a shocking truth: Donald Trump’s lies and fabrications don’t horrify America—they enthrall us—and explains how we can avoid falling for them.
"Can you believe what Donald Trump said?"
In Gaslighting America, Carpenter breaks down Trump’s formula, showing why it’s practically foolproof, playing his victims, the media, the Democrats, and the Republican fence-sitters perfectly. She traces how this tactic started with Nixon, gained traction with Bill Clinton, and exploded under Trump. If you think Trump is driving you crazy, it’s because he is. Now, in this urgent book, she explains how to withstand the fire.
Where some people see lies, Trump’s fierce followers see something different. A commitment to winning at all costs; there is nothing he could say that would erode their support at long as it’s in the name of taking down his political enemies.
His opponents on the left and right continue to act as if his fake narratives and conspiracy theories will bring him down, when in fact, they are the ruses that raised him up.
As a conservative former staffer to a competing presidential campaign, Amanda Carpenter witnessed her fellow Republicans fall in line behind Trump. As a political commentator, she was publicly smeared by one of his supporters on live television without a shred of evidence supporting the allegations. Slowly, she watched her entire party succumb to Trump and become defenders of his tactics, and Gaslighting America may be the only hope to bring them back to reality.
Carpenter, a former congressional staffer and self-declared "never Trump" conservative, scathingly revisits the 2016 presidential election and first year of Donald Trump's presidency in a convincing attempt to pinpoint the methods behind Trump's rise to power. Calling the methods gaslighting, after Patrick Hamilton's 1938 melodrama Gas Light, in which a man's lies gradually convince his wife that she is going insane, Carpenter identifies five distinct gaslighting steps: "stake a claim"; "advance and deny"; "create suspense" by announcing forthcoming evidence; "discredit the opponent" with personal attacks; and "win" by self-proclamation. The author uses a plethora of examples to build her case, from Trump's famous public questioning of the authenticity of Barack Obama's birth certificate, to a personally relevant episode in which Trump and his campaign pushed an unsubstantiated National Enquirer story rumoring an affair between Carpenter and her former boss, Sen. Ted Cruz. As a counter to these tactics, the author closes with tips to avoid succumbing to Trump's strategy ("try to add some substance to your media diet") and a plea for politicians to take back the narrative with more positive, truthful versions of gaslighting tactics, such as to "get people talking." For right-leaning readers aghast at the current state of politics, Carpenter's book will serve as a beacon of hope.

It’s so rare & brave to have an Anti-Trump story from any media.
This is something you never see. A story claiming a sitting Republican President is a racist, stupid, xenophobic, homophobic, lying, etc. about the Democrats wanting to get rid of Capitalism and replace it with Socialism. Democrats are totally for Capitalism. It’s so rare & brave to have an Anti-Trump story from any media. This book tells the brave story about how the media won’t cover Democrats in a positive way, they only cover Republicans in a positive way. Trump is making it up when he says in every poll for decades that the entire mainstream media admit they vote Democrat and they’re Leftist Democrats by 99%. Trump and his delusional supporters believed it when Trump said Hillary erased 33,000 emails at the time, that she mishandled Top Secret information. That Hillary was the only person in history who had a Top Secret & Confidential server at her private residence. Trumps lying because there’s ZERO evidence of any criminal acts, misleading investigators, destroying evidence, emails weren’t erased, in spite of what Trump said, Hillary was a hero in Benghazi. When Trump said she had problems with her fundraising so bad that her own handlers begged her to shut it down, that didn’t happen, Trump made it ALL up. Even the leaders in Haiti must be supporting Trump because he said the Clintons “never gave them any money to rebuild after the earthquake,” that the building’s that were built didn’t have rebar, etc and are unsafe to occupy. The Democrats have been working on getting African Americans out of poverty, if it wasn’t for the Republicans and “White Nationalism,” the African American community would be already assimilated into America. Trump and several in the African American Community who asked the question: Which Party loses votes, their base, their fundraising, basically has to start over and find a new base over time, IF, African Americans assimilate in harmony into society as it is today instead of staying in poverty, dangerous neighborhoods, etc?? Trump and many other African Americans and surprisingly democrats said it would be Democrats. That’s preposterous! The Democrats have called Republicans r”racist” every election cycle because Democrats believe the number one problem facing African Americans is Republican voters and any white non-Democrats. I mean it obvious the African Americans would much further ahead if we could just get rid of every Republican, Black and White, every Republican White and Black President and Presidential Candidate who’s not a Democrat. That’s the real truth MR Trump, according to the point of this book. Forget that your administration has given African Americans the smallest unemployment numbers in history, the most African Americans are working in history in only three years of your presidency. The approval rating of African Americans is the highest for any Republican or Democrat in history at this point in your term. Forget all that, they just believe your lies according to this brave book. Forget that if a Democrat finds out you’re black and voting Republican, or for Trump, they call blacks viscous racist names. Trump is causing all that.
Obviously this has been a sarcastic review to illustrate the idiotic things you have to believe to believe this book, and I haven’t even touched the surface. The framers wanted people from all walks of life to come serve in the government. Not career politicians. And certainly not all lawyers. Here’s proof. Read the Constitution, go ahead Nancy, media, it won’t bite you. The Constitution does NOT require a Supreme Court Justice be a lawyer. Why? They had lawyers. Because they trusted the people to have common sense enough not to find Abortion in there, but somehow the 2nd a Amendment isn’t clear. That’s why!
THIS BOOK IS JUST MORE FAKE NEWS FROM THE SAME OLD GUARD WHO WANT TRUMP TO STOP MAKING THEM ALL LOOK BAD. TRUMP HAS EXPOSED THESE CORRUPT POLITICIANS IN THE DEMOCRAT PARTY AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS EXPOSED THEM, THEY’LL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN.
