Careers have distinct phases, with accompanying opportunities and challenges in each. The initial quest is to gain an education, find the right job, and grow in it. This is followed by learning to manage and lead, eventually making a successful transition to retirement, and, hopefully, maintaining a satisfactory quality of life throughout this entire career lifecycle. Each of these stages requires very different types of skills. An acute awareness of this and an ability to develop essential new skills and relinquish old ones can greatly enhance both professional success and personal fulfillment.
