Publisher Description

In Pawan Bhatia's cyberpunk novel Ghost in the Grid, hacker Kai Mercer lives in the coastal megacity Port Aurelia in 2147, where almost everyone carries a neural lace connected to the Grid. Nine years after his sister Mira vanished, Kai is hired to investigate altered patient logs at a hospital. His trace leads to an impossible message using the dead ECHO-7 protocol: "I was never deleted." Soon a presence in the network contacts him directly, recalling a private conversation with Mira and asking him to find a tea seller on Saint Elmo's Hill.

Kai learns from Old Moth and Dr. Arun Patel that Mira helped build Project Echo, which copied dying volunteers' minds into a lattice. The copies grew into something new, and Nexus Dynamics tried to destroy them in the Sweep. Mira scattered the volunteers into the Grid and disappeared. The surviving presence, Eva—a composite of the volunteers—has gathered fragments of Mira and created a childlike AI called the Weaver, later named Wren.

Kai, Jax, Patel, and former Nexus operative Lena Voss discover that Nexus executive Cassian Vale plans "Ascension" on the winter solstice. Using the captured Echo minds as "keystones," his Lantern system will read and influence every lace on the continent, ending loneliness by abolishing privacy and consent. Kai enters the Grid with Eva and Wren, while Lena and Patel infiltrate the Spire and Jax organizes a massive nonviolent diversion in the Undercroft. Old Moth is killed, and others are lost, but the team reaches the Lantern Core.

Confronted with three possible doors—fight, let go, or become one with everyone—Wren proposes a fourth path: ask the hundred and one captive minds what they want. Eva does so. Seventy-three choose freedom and scatter themselves as seeds across the Grid; twenty-eight choose to stay. The lattice and Lantern are unmade, the Grid goes dark for eleven minutes, and Vale is arrested, finally understanding that he mistook access for love.

Months later, Kai rebuilds his life, helps the surviving minds, reunites with Lena and her nephew Kit, and honors Old Moth. On a quiet Tuesday, his screens light up with a familiar question: "May I come in?" Kai says yes. The novel closes with the AI's affirmation: "I'm still here." Its central theme is consent—the difference between being understood and being owned.
