A successful wolf reintroduction campaign is all Becca needs to land her dream assignment in Yellowstone, but something is horribly wrong in the desert.
Junior Fish and Wildlife project manager Becca Olsen is desperate to save her wolves, her relationship, and her job on her first solo wolf reintroduction campaign, but the perky voice of the dimpled desk jockey fails to assure ranchers their cattle were safe. Wolf tracking collars begin to disappear. Are angry ranchers killing her babies, or is there some truth to the legend Fantasma del Gris, Ghost of the Gray?
Becca and imposing Wildlife Officer Daphne Bender team with a pair of local boys to search the remote terrain where cactus, rocks, and rattlesnakes rule. Somewhere in the distance, the Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, an underground tomb constructed in the middle of nowhere to store the nation’s most dangerous radioactive waste. While the eclectic posse searches for the remaining wolves, ominous sounds, swift shadows, and a shocking discovery have the newly minted friends confronting fears only imagined in nightmares. They soon realize—wolves are not the greatest danger in the desert.

Hard to put down
Bravo for Ghost of the Gray! Dimples, ponytails, and true grit are out to save the day! I found the novel to have a Cussler-esque quality, but instead of a rip-roaring, aquatic ride, Ghost of the Gray weaves a compelling story grinding the reader into the sandy, thorny, and desiccated desert around Carlsbad, New Mexico. The novel introduces a cast of endearing characters (what’s not to like about a hero with dimples and a ponytail?), many gritty, hard-working ranchers and townsfolk, and sleazy government types whose motives and actions are right there with the worst of Washington DC's Beltway Bandits. And just when it’s needed, bits of effective comic relief pop into the narrative and keep the story fresh and moving along. Two thumbs up for Ghost of the Gray, and hope to see more dimples and ponytails in the future.
