Publisher Description

In this new collection, which contains most of the ghost stories of Tanith Lee – including 4 new tales original to this volume – Lee slips freely through the full gamut of Fantasy, SF, Horror, Historical, Parallel and Contemporary genres. The themes range, amongst others, with a lost love in early 20th Century New Zealand, a bullied child in 1970’s India, into the underhill palace of a brooding magician in search of wonders, among the guests of a modern spiky wedding-breakfast, and beside a psychic, on a far planet whose damson skies are adrift with flying whales...

The moods conjured are dark, unnerving or plain nasty; or else sad, tender, kind and - now and then – outright crazy.

Turn up the light.

And don’t look behind you.

Themed Collection by the Late Great Tainth Lee

“Ghosteria Volume One: The Stories” is a collection of short stories and a poem by the late great Mistress of Fantasy, Tanith Lee. As the name suggests, this collection is concerned with the spirits of the departed. These ghosts take many forms in this collection, from psychic impressions on alien worlds in science fictional settings, to classic tales of gothic horror, and even a beautiful warm tale of the ghost of a doll who befriends the ghost of a cat. These are masterful stories, and span the range of Ms. Lee’s career. Four stories and the poem are original to this collection.

The tone of these stories are also varied, few are actual horror, many are fantasy, some are dark fantasy. Like any collection, some stories will impress the reader more than others. I was particularly taken by the beautiful ““Thuvia Made of Mars” in which there are no human ghosts at all. “The Abortionist’s Horse” was also a memorable story, although it tended more toward the darker end of this collection. “Blue Vase of Ghosts” seems almost like a story of the Dying Earth, but it was in fact published first in a fantasy magazine.

As the name would suggest, there is another Ghosteria Volume. This is known as “Ghosteria 2: The Novel: Zircons Can Be Mistaken” and I’ve put it on my to be read list.
