Publisher Description

Sometimes when people die, it comes as a great shock. Even to them…

A group of the dead linger here, in the yellow dwelling on the hill – once a castle, then a stately home, now falling into ruin.

These ghosts drift and mingle, and brood on their lost lives. Death can be caused by so many things – war, pandemics, ordinary murder – even suicide or accident. Even time. But after death, surely, one could hope for peace? Not any more.

For with 2020 the New Apocalypse began. Civilisation crashed, and outside this ancient building things terrible, predatory, mindless and unkillable roam and bellow.

Now all the lights have gone out for good –

Where do you turn?

Short Novel With No Living Characters

“Ghosteria 2: The Novel: Zircons Can Be Mistaken” is part of a two volume set, it is preceded by “Ghosteria Volume One: The Stories.” This second volume is a short novel by the late great Mistress of Fantasy, Tanith Lee. As the name suggests, these two books are concerned with the spirits of the departed.

This novel is set in the year 2020, when the world has come to an end. It seems the zombie apocalypse has happened off-screen, and as a result , there are no living persons in the book at all. Our characters are mainly a group of five ghosts, who all died some time ago. Their spirits have gathered at a country manor, where they either lived or worked, or had a memorable experience. The oldest is Guy (Gui) a Knight from the time of the castle ruins. The newest is Edward, the librarian who died due to an accident while cataloging the books at the manor. We learn the backstory of these spirits from their memories. Each is an interesting character, and their lives and eventual deaths are the most interesting portion of the book.

I won’t give away two much of the plot, but these five ghosts eventually find a way to leave the manor. Then there is an epilogue involving three more ghosts. One has been there all the time unknown to us, two others arrive from the city they were fleeing from when they died.

Tainth Lee is a great author, and I generally love her work. While I really liked “Ghosteria Volume One: The Stories” this novel wasn’t my favorite. It just didn’t gel completely for me. However, I still enjoyed the characters, and their stories.
