Giants Are Shy

You know you can't go wrong when your child asks to read a book over and over and over and over again! This book has become my daughter's new favorite nighttime read. The illustrations are beautiful, the writing is sweet, and the Giants, they're so lovable! My daughter and I are looking forward to more wonderful reads from Max Estes!

We loved it! This was the first book I've downloaded to read to my 4 year old and what a hit! She was quiet at the beginning, for the first couple of pages just staring. As the reader, I loved the tempo. The pages turned into poetry and the words rhyming ends. By the time we met the giant in the desert, my sweet daughter was laughing out loud: "giants don't have cell phones!" And from there on out, she laughed, she expressed empathy and worked to connect with the giant. He became her friend and the book, an instant hit! Thank you Max Estes! In the words of my daughter, "How great."

As a teacher, there's much to love about Giants Are Shy. Academically, it's great for developing and assessing a student's reading comprehension. Where do giants bathe? What happens when giants hide in the city? Fun questions like these and more abound and are easily found throughout the text. I especially like how the book celebrates a marginalized group for their differences. That's a feeling many children can relate to and a message many will likely take comfort in and derive strength from. Whether you're a teacher or a parent, Giants Are Shy is a book your kids will surely love and grow from too!
