Publisher Description
Samuel Butler was an English novelist, essayist, and critic whose works foreshadowed the collapse of the Victorian illusion of eternal progress. Butler belonged to no literary school, and spawned no followers during his lifetime. His controversial assertions shut him out from both of the opposing factions of church and science which played a large role in late Victorian cultural life.
"God the Known and God the Unknown" first appeared in the form of a series of articles which were published in "The Examiner". It is a remarkable book, which is considered to be the earliest expression of the Vitalist philosophy, arguing that evolution has a purpose and that purpose is, ultimately the creation of a God. The author attempts to justify the concept of physicality of God, as well. This provocative work won't leave indifferent any reader!
