Publisher Description
A crusade is called to aid the Kingdom of Azgald in the distant Nordslands, and the young idealistic knight Godfrey does not hesitate to volunteer. Yet Godfrey soon learns that the greatest threat to the expedition's success is not the savage clans under High Warlord Alvir and the Great Witch of the North, Nera, or the orcs and cyclopes that fight beside the clans, but the rivalries among the crusaders themselves. Can Godfrey interpret the vision granted to him by the gods and unite the crusaders with his holy blade? Will his love, Madeline, be able to keep her magical powers hidden from suspicious priests and opportunistic lords? Will they be able to stop Nera and Alvir from unleashing an ancient evil upon Azgald, or will Godfrey and his friends all meet a bitter end in the frigid Nordslands?
Customer Reviews
Excellent, must-read fantasy.
I had no idea what to expect when I picked this up for the first time. As a scifi fan, and a fan of classic literature, I never really got into fantasy; but when a friend of mine suggested this, I gave it a try, and boy howdy! The character development is excellent, and I found my doubts concerning the setting and world building were thrown aside as I became very quickly interested in the characters and concerned about their fates. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I will at least mention that the way the book starts instantly hooked me, as it will you. I’ve read enough books to know when a method is rote, and I found myself pleasantly surprised to find the story unpredictable while still being easy to follow. I read The Revenant last year and was surprised anyone greenlit that awful book for a film. Glad they did, but the fact that such a popular book can read like a highschool creative writing project blew my mind. My mind was equally blown when I found this gem, which has been significantly more enjoyable and yet, I’ve never heard of the author. As soon as I finished the book, I was excited to read more from Howard, but it seems his next book is still in the works, and I cannot be more excited. Thanks to my friend for recommending this, and thanks to Howard for dispelling my preconceptions of Fantasy Fiction and writing such a remarkably good read.
