This book is the result of a simple question. My nephew, David Bryan Paige, asked me what theology I am following. When he asked, I didn’t have time to discuss and told him I’d get back.
That night the question started echoing in my thoughts. I realized that while I could recite the Nicene or the Apostles’ creeds from my Anglican upbringing, I’d never really thought deeply enough about my own personal theological beliefs to be able to share them with another person. Worse still, I wasn’t entirely sure if they really fit within the confines of Scripture since it is easy to adopt stories from our early Sunday School lessons, and the myriad of popular media that often have taken a broad “editorial license” from what the Bible contains.
As I drifted off to sleep, I remember dreaming about baseball while these questions were still swirling around in my thoughts. I thought it strange because I’ve never really followed professional baseball. I have fond memories of playing it as a child, but these were casual games in neighborhood yards. I didn’t participate in the organized teams of my school years except for one brief summer when I was eight years old. I was a third-string shortstop.
