Alex Munroe hated being dead, but he hated not being a cop even more. Creative detective story!
I enjoy both mysteries and science fiction. This book is a wonderfully creative fusion of the two, that starts with solid character development and story writing, while introducing you to this future time that includes the AfterNet. The premise is that in the not-too-distant future, it is proven that the souls of the dead walk the earth, but are unable to communicate with the living or each other. With the development of the AfterNet, a special Internet field is generated that allows the dead to communicate with the living and with each other.
With wit and wisdom, Petkus explores the social and religious ramifications the discovery of the afterlife would have. How some would fear the dead, while others embrace the new discovery and converse with dead relatives. All this is packaged around very believable and likeable main characters who share sarcastically funny AfterNet banter about what is going on as they work their way through the story.
Having lived in Colorado for many years, I enjoyed that the story was set in the Denver area. Her descriptions of places are true and added a tangible angle to the story for me.
Overall, It's a really fun read and I'm looking forward to the sequel!
