Publisher Description
In this dazzling historical romance, a Duke with a complicated romantic history and a bookseller with a family business to protect find themselves drawn to each other—even if their hidden secrets should keep them apart. Perfect for fans of USA Today bestsellers Lenora Bell and Sophie Jordan!
Dorian Whitaker, Duke of Holland, needs an heir after his so-called “fairytale marriage” ended in disaster. When the intriguing bookseller he’s hired to liquidate his late wife’s library finds love letters revealing an affair, he is drawn into a mystery alongside a lady whose sharp intellect dazzles him and dares him to imagine a new adventure outside the gilded cage of the Ton.
If anyone found out Caroline Danvers writes erotic novels under a pen name, she’d face utter ruin. Except her latest hero inspiration is none other than the Duke of Holland—a man with the power to destroy her family’s bookshop. And yet the real man proves to be so much more than the character she created. Even as they expose the dark secrets of his past, she knows he can never discover her own. But the more time they spend together, the more tempting it is to rewrite their ending and turn fantasy into reality.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
The sensual first Bluestocking Booksellers Regency from Bennett (Any Rogue Will Do) kicks off after Caroline "Caro" Danvers's father, a vicar, discovers that she writes erotica and throws her out of the house. She travels to London to stay with her aunt and uncle at their bookshop, Martin House Books. Outside the shop, Caro runs into a man she later discovers is Dorian Whitaker, Duke of Holland. Caro agrees to Dorian's request to organize his late wife's library for sale—and discovers spicy love letters hidden among the pages. A distressed Dorian reveals that the letters were written by the man his wife cheated on him with, and Caro offers to help him learn the man's identity. Along the way, their friendship evolves into a love affair, but the class difference between them means they can never marry. Meanwhile, Caro anonymously publishes an erotic novel that takes London by storm—especially as the capital's gossipmongers spread rumors that the hero is based on Dorian. What will happen when Dorian learns of Caro's scandalous side hustle? Bennett expertly develops her characters, highlighting how their similarities enable them to breach Regency England's societal strictures. As emotional as it is steamy, this promises good things for the series to come.
Customer Reviews
Title is overreaching
This book was ok, but the title is a bit misleading. Barely any “bad” behavior occurred. The main characters were older, but were written and sounded juvenile/silly. It’s definitely written in a more modern tone as evidenced by their conversations and phrases. The basis of the story was quite boring. The H has no spine and was an emotional mess; the h was a better “detective” and figured things out better than him.
