Groundwork

Groundwork: Art Honoring the Aquifers is a luminous collection of silk banner artworks by textile artist and educator Gwendolyn Hustvedt. Created in her San Marcos, Texas studio, this photo-based art book reveals the rich subterranean world of aquifers through the lens of sustainability, mythology, and surface design. Each of the fifteen works featured in this volume offers a portal into the life beneath our feet, from fossil-rich limestone formations and root networks to bats and wild rice. Hustvedt’s work merges scientific curiosity with symbolic depth, drawing on her deep research into the Edwards Aquifer, the Serti silk-painting tradition, and the intuitive pull of the collective unconscious.
