Publisher Description

An original novel based on Guild Wars—the award-winning epic fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game!

Death Sails the Seas . . .

The lost kingdom of Orr lies beneath the ocean waves, an entire civilization swallowed by an ancient cataclysm. For centuries, it has lain dormant in the depths, its ancient secrets lost.

Until now.

The Elder Dragon Zhaitan has risen. In its wake, the drowned kingdom of Orr is reborn—and another is destroyed. The city of Lion’s Arch, for generations a cornerstone of civilization in Tyria, is brutally swept beneath the waves, leaving nothing but ruins. Among the survivors is Cobiah Marriner, a human sailor shipwrecked by the tsunami and stranded at sea. When he is rescued by a ferocious charr, Cobiah knows that he’s been plunged into a world forever changed.

Now, Zhaitan’s undead servants dominate the sea, destroying port after port and slaughtering anything in their path. In the midst of ruin, Cobiah vows to see Lion’s Arch rebuilt. Amid the storm of the dragon’s rising, Cobiah must become a hero to his crew and an admiral to the pirate fleet, and face the ghosts of his past. Only then will he master the Sea of Sorrows and crush the armada of Orr.

Beautiful tale that brings the giant MMO to a personal level

The previous guild wars books were epic scale, grandiose adventures aimed at exploring a world, and developing its mythologies. "Sea of Sorrows" has its fair share of adventure, but really shines for its touching, small-scale approach. Most fantasy books focus on one adventure. Here we follow the main character from a teenage boy joining a ship crew to avoid an abusive parent to a young man, using his pirated wealth to start a city, until his older years as a bureaucrat, who must defend his life's work from a plague and a rival kingdom.

Best of all is the story doesn't require any knowledge of the game it's based on. The author's descriptions are vivid and perfectly capture the various races and beings found in the lands and waters of Tyria.

Awesome Story

I enjoyed this quite a bit. The writing was excellent.

Brings the game more depth.

I really do hope Arena bring out more quality writers like Ree. The book is an excellent read if one wants more lore on the architecture of Lions Arch (a city of distinct marina design). Even if you don't play the game, this book will take you on an adventure that you won't regret. How good was the book? Well let's just say I finished it in a day and a half!
