Hadda Pada

A crystal ball is tossed like a toy—until Rannveig warns the sisters it may be their “life-egg,” the fragile thing on which their lives depend. Hadda Padda is listening, but it is not fate’s only mystery in the room.

In the richly furnished home of Iceland’s town judge, teasing and old folk tales give way to the return of Ingolf, Hadda’s childhood companion. At twenty-six, she has hidden her love for him behind a careful reserve, afraid that certainty might destroy the sweetness of her dreams. Now they share their first kiss again in memory—and the promise of a deeper one in the present—while the nurse warns that marriage does not always bring happiness. Can Hadda risk learning whether Ingolf’s love is as real as her own?
