Publisher Description
An unpredictable, poignant, and captivating tale for readers of all ages, by the critically acclaimed author of Only Forward.
There are a million stories in the world. Most are perfectly ordinary.
This one… isn’t.
Hannah Green actually thinks her story is more mundane than most. But she’s about to discover that the shadows in her life have been hiding a world where nothing is as it seems: that there's an ancient and secret machine that converts evil deeds into energy, that some mushrooms can talk — and that her grandfather has been friends with the Devil for over a hundred and fifty years, and now they need her help.

Customer Reviews
If you believe in the supernatural being common and like Neil Gaiman...
This is a magnificent book for you. The casual writing style, and almost off-hand way in which surreal things happen, is refreshing. Hannah is an 11-yr old - still in that weird space of ‘becoming’, where childhood innocence is still there but realizations and understandings of how the “adult world” works.Michael Marshall Smith has some cutting (but hopeful) insights on human nature / emotional entanglements. Sooooo good. It’s been sitting on my shelf for a couple years now, and I’m kicking myself for not picking it up sooner.
