Charles Reade (8 Jun 1814 – 11 Apr 1884) was an English novelist and dramaturg. As an author, he always had an eye to stage effect in scene and situation as well as in dialogue. Reade's novels were popular, and he was among England's highest-paid novelists. But, many libraries refused to carry his works on the grounds that they were indecent.
