A boy starts a country newspaper: buys the type, sets it, prints it, sells the advertising and then discovers what happens when the paper takes a side in a local quarrel. S. A. D. Cox explains the printing trade in detail and apologises in the preface for how technical it is. That detail is exactly what makes the book worth keeping. Fifty-two plates of painting from 1853 to 1918, among them Eastman Johnson and Mary Cassatt, take up the quieter domestic themes of home, warmth and childhood that run beneath the newspaper quarrel.
