This is the sole truth that twelve-year-old Jacquelin Shepard knows.

North is safety. Safety from the sickness that has killed so many around the world. Safety from the thieves and thugs that have thrived in this greatly reduced place. North is survival in a world where survival is all that is left.

All of this changes the day she finds Timothy Hill badly beaten and unconscious outside the entrance to her home and hiding place. Even as she contemplates what she should do, she can hear the men who are searching for Timothy as they creep ever closer.
