Publisher Description

In the twelve stories of Heart Lamp, Banu Mushtaq exquisitely captures the everyday lives of women and girls in Muslim communities in southern India. Published originally in the Kannada language between 1990 and 2023, praised for their dry and gentle humour, these portraits of family and community tensions have garnered both censure from conservative quarters as well India's most prestigious literary awards. This is a collection sure to be read for years to come.

Engaging

Poignant and amusing short stories about the lives of village women in India. Liberal sprinkling of translated vernacular makes the story telling realistic. Effectiveness wanes a bit as stories become somewhat repetitive.

I read the sample first and found it mesmerizing.

The translation is impressive and novel. It ably conveys the emotions and feelings of the stories. I must confess that I speak Kannada and the colloquialisms enhanced comprehension for me but some may find it hampers readability.
