Great fantasy for 21st century
Just as I did when I read "Heartstone," I was pleasantly surprised to leave behind the unfortunate traditions that have crept into fantasy novelsl--long introductions, pulp writing styles, or side-adventures that have nothing to do with the main plot. Once again, Schreiber gives a trilogy-worth of plot and character boiled down to its pure essences.
Yes, this fantasy (like "Heartstone") employs some common themes, yet it blows up stereotypes (the hero wants to avoid war at all costs--even to himself), and it moves like the best Hollywood thrillers. Once you start this novel, you better set aside your evenings to finish it.
If you like Tolkien and LeGuin but always thought their styles were a bit stilted, if you like Harry Potter but thought some of the plot was predictable, if you felt that Martin needs an editor, this book should be your next purchase.
I see that iTunes lists this as "Children's Fiction" -- WRONG -- maybe YA fiction (i.e. Hunger Games), but the violence starts in the first chapter and continues throughout the epic.
