Perhaps no one could make this formulaic third Nikki Heat thriller marketed as authored by Richard Castle, the fictional writer in the television series Castle hold a listener's attention for more than 11 hours, but Johnny Heller's uninspired reading certainly falls short. The book centers on yet another feisty, sexy, maverick female police detective and a sensational murder this time of a New York City priest with wider implications. In his narration, Heller's emotional range is limited: passages describing a fight or a brush with death sound virtually identical to low-octane sections of the book. Additionally, Heller's use of accents is inconsistent, and his plodding delivery does nothing to add drama to the book's climax. Given that the protagonist is a woman, hiring a male narrator was a gamble and one that doesn't pay off in this case. A Hyperion paperback.

A good Saturday night read
Thanks for the third in a series of clever crime novels. Nikki Heat and Jameson Rook are enjoyable characters who engage readers in their verbal foreplay. They are salt on the Beckett and Castle margarita.
Art imitates life imitates art imitates....
Just an easy, entertaining read even if it weren't written by a figment of the imagination wrapped in a figment of the imagination. I so enjoy trying to explain to people how much I enjoy a novel written by a character on a TV show about a character in his novels that is actually...oh God, I have really lost it. And then there's the graphic novel that is featured on the TV show but that actually exists but not really. Can someone help me with this? I just got tickets to a Broadway show starring the mother of the character who doesn't exist who wrote the book that I am now reviewing? Please. I really do need help.
An unexpectedly easy read
I got this book as part of a package with a season of episodes of ABC's Castle crime dramedy show.
What I expected was a short book tailing Castle's written counterpart from his character's book series as a half-baked supplement to fans of the show.
What I got was a 250 page novel which was surprisingly well written, easy to read and emotional.
I'll be picking up the other Richard Castle novels from iBooks for sure.
