The science fiction epic of our time has arrived.
Three years ago, an object one hundred miles across was spotted on a trajectory for Earth's sun. Now, its journey is almost over. As it approaches, two competing manned vehicles race through almost half a million kilometers of space to reach it first. But when they both arrive on the entity, they learn that it has been sent toward Earth for a reason. An intelligent race is desperately attempting to communicate with our primitive species. And the message is: Help us.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
This slick space opera trilogy starter sets up an interesting situation but never quite brings it to life. Rival expeditions from the U.S. and a Russia India Brazil coalition land on a planetoid and discover it's actually an ancient interstellar space ship. Astronauts moving through the ship reawaken machines that alter the environment in strange and dangerous ways and resurrect dead people the explorers loved or hated. The characters attempt to decipher the aliens' purpose while struggling to survive in increasingly hostile surroundings. Meanwhile, back on Earth, NASA administrators try to monitor the situation while fending off political meddling and miscommunications. Both authors are experienced scriptwriters who are better at inventing dramatic spectacles than finding fresh things to say about people. Since the book has already been optioned by Warner Bros., readers may want to wait for flashy CGI special effects to balance out the limp characterization.

An entertaining adventure
This is an engaging story set in a very grounded near future, detailing human explorers encountering a mysterious artifact that arrives in Earth orbit. The characters are sympathetic, and the action moves along at a brisk pace.
This seems to be the setup of a more involved storyline, and by the end I was quite intrigued by the unfolding mystery. Not every question is answered, but that is kind of the fun with stories about encounters with mysteries from beyond.
I look forward to seeing what happens in the forthcoming books, since it appears we will be departing the familiar world and striking off for uncharted territory!
Heaven's Shadow
This book was awesome! It did MOT "fizzle out" at all! I'm not one for Alien type books but I loved this one and can't wait for the next one to come out! I recommend this book for anyone who likes "end of the world" type books! Whatever_whatever is a dumb butt so don't listen to him/her!
Started out great, went downhill
After a promising start pitting two teams of astronauts against each-other in a space race with geopolitical underpinnings... this book just plain fizzles out. There is an interesting premise to the alien side of the story, but we never really get answers beyond a cursory explanation in a rushed "wrap it all up" final chapter. Very unsatisfying.
