Veteran trail-boss and inveterate gambler, "Lucky" Lukas Winner is run out of town when his luck runs out at the local town boss' crooked game. Broke and on the run, our misanthropic cowpoke is adopted by a young faerie child, orphaned by the massacre of his village. Lukas is adopted whether he likes it or not (and he doesn't) by a faerie child who doesn't speak a word of the common tongue and just keeps repeating the question "yupha mai". Will he find a new home for the faerie he calls Yuphamai? Will he find a way to beat the murdering town boss at his own game? Will he ever figure out what yuphamai means?
