Otome Isekai? Bedroom Farce? Office Sitcom? Yes, and There’s More (And it All Works)!
Oblivious, OP main character? Check. Generic pseudo-Euro medieval setting? Check. Reformed villainess? Check. Agonizingly slow romcom? Check. Saint vs Great Evil Nastybad? Sorta. Academy arc? See next volume. Genre-aware, very occasional snarky narrator asides? Yes, but does it fit this subgenre?
Given all the tropes already in progress here, I guess the author had to jettison all the usual stat screens, RPG leveling grinds, skill infodumps, pointless harem admiration, and other genre staples, and just go with a well-written story about (mostly, well, maybe) plausible, three dimensional characters somehow blending in a story with glancing blows from other genre types (stand up comedy duos?), and somehow making it all very entertaining. While the main character’s over-the-top focus on her very restricted (neurodivergent?) interest can get a bit tiring on occasion, the writing is so good, and the subtle twists to genre expectations are well enough done, that it’s overall a pleasure to read, and I had to give it a rare-for-me 5 stars. I’m hardly a literature expert, but I get Shakespearean comedy vibes here for some reason. And it wouldn’t surprise me if the author may have intended that.
Highly recommended for fans of “Reincarnated as a Villainess…” and “From Bureaucrat to Villainess…” and similar off-the-wall comedic isekai.
Very much looking forward to the anime, the author seems to have written the visuals with that in mind as well; it’s crying for a screen version.
