High Lonesome

A talented young scholar and Wyoming native takes us into the unseen American West.

Over the last few decades, something fundamental in America shifted. A region long dismissed as myth or empty space started to hum with new force. In High Lonesome, acclaimed sociologist Justin Farrell explains how the Mountain West quietly became the nation’s center of gravity.

A young woman leaves urban life behind and films herself alone experiencing the freedom of western wild spaces. A Lutheran prison chief builds the new Alcatraz in Colorado. An Army officer turns Idaho into a blueprint for national escape. An eco-activist hauls fuel cans up Vail Mountain in her truck, targeting a private-equity empire. Through these stories of spiritual reinvention, digital insurgency, and economic revolt, Farrell brings us not frontier kitsch but contemporary people wrestling with loneliness and rapid change in a landscape charged with possibility and danger.

Blending history, reportage, and personal narrative, High Lonesome reveals a region far stranger and far more influential than we know.
