“Pullman is quite possibly a genius.”—Newsweek
A war is brewing in Lyra’s world between those who would keep people in ignorance and those willing to fight for freedom. Lyra is thrust into the middle of the conflict when her uncle Asriel comes to Oxford, fomenting rebellion, and when her best friend, Roger, suddenly disappears.
Lyra learns that Roger was kidnapped by a shadowy organization that is rumored to experiment on children. To find him, she will travel to the cold, far North, where armored bears and witch clans rule—and where Asriel is attempting to build a bridge to a parallel world.
What Lyra doesn’t know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other—and that her actions will have consequences not just in her world, but in all the worlds beyond.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The first book of Philip Pullman’s beloved His Dark Materials series introduces us to a fascinating parallel universe where every human has an animal “dæmon” and kids possess elusive qualities that scientists are eager to harness. The book’s young and scrappy heroine, Lyra, gets pulled into a plot in which kids are being kidnapped for brutal experiments, and events turn more sinister with every page. Pullman uses elements of fantasy and adventure to crystallize the thrill and pain of growing up. The Golden Compass is a must-read for fantasy fans of all ages, but the appeal of this complex, imaginative, and page-turning book goes well beyond the genre.
Customer Reviews
This book always satisfies
I read this book first when I was a teenager and I loved it then. Now, 20 years later, I still really enjoyed this story.
Terrific books!
It's sad that this great country of ours is so resistant to anything that smacks of "non-believers". This book tells an incredible story, which also posits a world without religion, and offers up exciting visuals, ideas, plot, and riveting characters. These books should have been as popular as Twilight, Harry Potter, et al, book because of the foolish intolerant nutcases it's been smeared. If your looking for great young readers (adults enjoy it too) novels then pick this up.
HIs Dark Materials
This is an incredible trilogy to rival the Lord of the Rings!! An absolutely amazing ride, the first book is by far my least favorite, the other two get better and better. Excellent choice for all ages of readers from tweens to adults. Enjoy
