Publisher Description
The spellbinding sequel to The Golden Compass, the modern fantasy classic that Entertainment Weekly named an "All-Time Greatest Novel" and Newsweek hailed as a "Top 100 Book of All Time," continues the epic adventure, catapulting readers between worlds, and toward a devastating discovery.
Lost in a new world, Lyra finds Will—a boy on the run, a murderer—a worthy and welcome ally. For this is a world where soul-eating Specters stalk the streets and witches share the skies with troops of angels.
Each is searching—Lyra for the meaning of Dark Matter, Will for his missing father—but what they find instead is a deadly secret, a knife of untold power. And neither Lyra nor Will suspects how tightly their lives, their loves, their destinies are bound together...until they are split apart.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
It’s hard to imagine a book even more imaginative and action-packed than The Golden Compass, but Philip Pullman outdoes himself with the second installment of the His Dark Materials trilogy. As Lyra continues to search for the truth about the mysterious matter called Dust, she teams up with Will Parry, a boy from our world who possesses a knife that can cut windows into other dimensions. Pullman weaves together quantum physics with elements of folklore, the Bible, Milton, Westerns, and even British spy dramas. The Subtle Knife is a dazzling, mind-bending, and madcap adventure that’s hard to put down.

Better than the 1st book
“The Subtle Knife” picks up the pace from “The Golden Compass” by having the story now cross multiple universes, including our own world. Lyra’s new companion, Will Parry, is, IMO, a much deeper and better developed character than Lyra was in the 1st book. If anything, Will compliments Lyra, making her a fuller and more sympathetic protaganist. Pullman also brings a greater depth to his story and its arc with a myriad of characters and places. Yet, his mixing of science, fantasy and hooey, works well in some instances, not so in others. Given all that, I’m really looking forward to the 3rd book.

Awesome
Wonderful Middle Piece
The second of the series was amazing and I'm looking forward to the final. So many people when you tell them you're reading a fantasy turn off, like you're some kind loony. They have no idea how powerful and relevant these stories are. They're loss.
