The author offers a precious view of China during the late Ching dynasty from a Westerners point of view. I found out about this book while reading an American list of “must reads” in an advertisement in a colonial newspaper advertisement. Having majored in Chinese studies and been involved with the Chinese community for decades I feel confident in saying that the author seems to have offered a thoughtful and balanced perspective even if it is inevitably constrained by being one man’s viewpoint and a foreigner at that.
