Publisher Description

History of the Austrian Empire embraces all that is wild and wonderful in history; early struggles for aggrandizement, the fierce strife with the Turks, as wave after wave of Moslem invasion rolled up the Danube, the long conflicts and bloody persecutions of the Reformation, the thirty years' religious war, the meteoric career of Gustavus Adolphus and Charles XII. shooting athwart the lurid storms of battle, the intrigues of Popes, the enormous pride, power and encroachments of Louis XIV., the warfare of the Spanish succession and the Polish dismemberment. All these events combine in a sublime tragedy which fiction may in vain attempt to parallel.

Book Review: My Opinion

As I was reading this book, I came across redundant events, those mentioned earlier. That struck me as odd. Why cover the same ground twice? Several hundred pages in, it happened again with the exact words being used as earlier. At that point I realized how confused I had become in tracking all the events, basically the same warring events through the history of Europe. I honestly don’t know if perhaps the material had been assembled wrong or what. Regardless, I finally stopped reading at about halfway through, some 680 pages.

The author’s opinionated comments, very negative at times, didn’t help.
