Hocus Pocus Hocus Pocus

Description de l’éditeur

From the New York Times bestselling author of Slaughterhouse-Five comes an irresistible novel that combines “clever wit with keen social observation...[and] re-establishes Mr. Vonnegut’s place as the Mark Twain of our times” (Atlanta Journal & Constitution).

Here is the adventure of Eugene Debs Hartke. He’s a Vietnam veteran, a jazz pianist, a college professor, and a prognosticator of the apocalypse (and other things Earth-shattering). But that’s neither here nor there. Because at Tarkington College—where he teaches—the excrement is about to hit the air-conditioning. And it’s all Eugene’s fault.

A Well Spent Week

Hocus Pocus was my fourth Vonnegut novel after Slaughterhouse, Cat's Cradle, and Galapagos. The last book left such a bad taste in my mouth I stayed away from Kurt for 2 years until I picked up Hocus Pocus at a garage sale for $1. Looking back on it now, it was one of the best dollars I have ever spent. After the first couple of chapters, it quickly became my new favorite Vonnegut novel. The main character's transition from professor to prison guard to prisoner is a thing of literary beauty. How Kurt was able to turn an otherwise serious and distressing plot into a satiric and sarcastic story is pure genius. No, I have not read the more popular Vonnegut novels like Breakfast of Champions or The Sirens of Titan, but there is no doubt in my mind the average fan of all of the books I listed before (except Galapagos; anyone who liked it is an odd person) would thoroughly enjoy Hocus Pocus.

absolutely amazing

One of Vonnegut's best books! An enjoyable read that'll never make you want to stop!

New fav

This is my Second novel of Vonnegut's, after a re-read of slaughter house. I am amazed by his ability to keep a story feeling linear as it bounces along a timeline freely. This is definitely a must read for all Vonnegut fans.
