Publisher Description

Hollywood Against the Current is an interactive reading companion to six films by Martin Ritt — a director who built his career against systemic abuse, from his own blacklisting during the McCarthy era to a lifelong fascination with dissenters, organizers, and compromised idealists. Rather than move film by film, this guide is built as a comparison: it reads Hud (1963), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), Sounder (1972), The Front (1976), Norma Rae (1979), and Nuts (1987) across five recurring questions that thread Ritt's work — individual versus system, the price of dissent, dignity and self-determination, conscience and compromise, and solidarity versus isolation.
Ritt was not a visual stylist but an actor's director and a moralist, and his films are best read for the ethical situation at their core: a single person, and the power arrayed against them. Followed straight across all six films, each question builds into a sustained argument about what it means to stand against a system — and what it costs. Some of his dissenters prevail; many pay dearly; a few are simply used up.
Part of the Interactive Reading Guides series, it is meant to be watched alongside the films themselves: a companion to your own encounter with the work, never a substitute for it. It reproduces no film content, and all commentary is original.
