When starfighter pilot Simon Dodds is enrolled in a top secret military project, he and his wingmates begin to suspect that there is a lot more to the theft of a legendary battleship and an Imperial nation's civil war than either the Confederation Stellar Navy or the government are willing to let on.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. The characters have good back stories, the plot is well paced and has good detail. All in all a fun read.
Considerable depth for a free iBook. This was a page-turner with several unknowns still existing...can't wait for more!
Tried real hard
The story is interesting but as hard as I tried, there are so many plot devices that it becomes a tedious. If these were just technological plot devices, I could handle it (this is science fiction after all). But these are human action and behavior plot devices. For example, the captain of a star cruiser is found in a space pod unconscious and his ship is missing with no recollection of how it happened. So they put him back in command of another cruiser! Even Picard was relieved of duty and sent back to earth after his encounter with the Borg. This plus stereotypical cast (driven female pilot captain, quiet & mysterious hunk pilot, scatterbrained female pilot, carefree pilot, and careless pilot) forced me to stop half way through. I did try because I first wanted to quit after 10 pages.
The author says if you plan to read the trilogy, you should read the second edition of this book instead. That should have been my warning.
This would be a fine 10-15 year old reading (if they still read).
