"Prepare to meet your next summer binge read." —May Cobb, bestselling author of The Hunting Wives
From national bestselling author Ashley Winstead comes a buzzy, bloody new thriller about success, sisterhood, and demanding justice…by any means necessary.
What’s a girl got to do to get some fame, a few million record sales, and justice for murder?
Ten years ago, aspiring singer-actress Scout Sage lost the only thing that mattered: her sister, Georgia. Ever since Georgia’s mysterious death at a Hollywood party, Scout’s done her best to honor her memory, clawing her way through the industry and collecting a network of climbers along the way, fellow hot girls in stilettos with cutthroat ambition, a new Hollywood order.
But when a slew of targeted murders makes headlines across L.A., all pointing to Scout as the killer, she turns overnight from a mid-tier pop star into the world’s most famous (alleged) murderer. Now everything she’s worked to build—including the justice she wants for Georgia—will fall apart unless Scout can prove she’s not guilty.
Meanwhile, the young and unusual detective assigned to her case, herself no stranger to tragedy, begins to unearth secrets not even Scout knows, let alone her millions of new fans. Particularly about the ways Georgia’s death connects to an even older pattern of crimes long hushed over in Hollywood—an old reign of terror that, if brought to light, could be the fuel that ignites a reckoning the world over.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
How far would you go for fame…or revenge? As this glittering thriller opens, a young woman has just been found murdered in Los Angeles, a lyric from a pop song painted in blood on the wall of her home. Grey Holloway, a brilliant but unpopular detective in the LAPD who moonlights as a nightclub bottle girl to pay off student loans, follows the clues to Scout Sage, a singer supposedly linked to a circle of women who take bloody revenge on powerful, unscrupulous Hollywood men the law can’t touch. Did the murder of Scout’s teenage sister 10 years ago turn her into a vigilante? And will this convoluted case prove to be too close to home for Detective Holloway’s comfort? Everyone loves a juicy revenge plot, and it was great fun teasing out the clues in these parallel storylines through Holloway’s present day and Scout’s past. Author Ashley Winstead’s gripping tale will leave you thinking about what making other people pay might actually cost.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
A mid-tier pop star becomes a murder suspect in this slick suspense tale from Winstead (The Future Saints). Ten years ago, Scout Sage's sister, Georgia, died at a Hollywood party under suspicious circumstances. Ever since, Scout's been out for revenge. When Grey Holloway, an L.A. police detective who moonlights as a bottle waitress at a trendy nightclub, catches wind that Scout is the main suspect in the murder of a Hollywood power broker, she finds her loyalties divided, since Grey's own sister disappeared under circumstances similar to Georgia's. As rumors swirl that Scout has forged a network of women willing to kill exploitative men, Grey's values are put to the test. Winstead mostly delivers the savage #MeToo revenge fantasy her premise promises, but she introduces so many victims of the same unscrupulous Hollywood practices that the horrors grow monotonous and it becomes difficult to keep track of the characters. Thankfully, a series of genuinely satisfying third-act plot twists save the day. This entertains and disquiets enough to make an impression.
