Another winner from Mina Vaughn.
I’d read How to Discipline Your Vampire, and found it carried laugh out loud moments with solid characters and a true belief in the attitude of “kink with a wink”. Mina Vaughn has created another story with the same fun tones, sharp dialogue and some clever twists in How to Punish your Playboy.
This road trip with a twist story features Veronika, a pin up model that just discovered she’s in the running for Miss Pin Up Las Vegas. Owner of a garage, Veronika has skills, and restores classics for a living. Her roommate / best friend / dome mentor / trainer Sarah shows some of the hurdles this newbie Domme is working through. Toss in an ex-boyfriend that is less than lovely and her own body issues and Veronika has plenty to make her easy to relate to.
Deciding to auction off her newly restored car to finance her trip to Vegas for the competition, we meet Aston. (I love the nod to the upscale British car model). Aston is a restauranteur, a huge spoilt brat with a very overbearing family. Using these dynamics as integral parts of Aston’s personality, and having Veronika’s response to his issues that range from baiting to funny keep these two well grounded in reality and give the reader a sense of camaraderie.
During the trek west, the two explore, after a misunderstood comments, their fantasies and desires for more. Mixed in are some lovely foodie references, humor and some increasingly steamy scenes that build to their sorting their own issues as they learn to make a relationship that works between them.
Keeping the fun in the story doesn’t allow for the D/s storyline to take itself too seriously, and keeps the action and the characters easy to relate to. While this sort of road trip may be little more than total disaster in reality, the unique twists and humor keep the story fresh, funny and engaging. Another winner from Mina Vaughn.
