Publisher Description

WINNER OF THE 2022 NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE

An extraordinary evocation of a grown daughter’s attachment to her mother, and of both women’s strength and resiliency. I Remain in Darkness recounts Annie’s attempts first to help her mother recover from Alzheimer’s disease, and then, when that proves futile, to bear witness to the older woman’s gradual decline and her own experience as a daughter losing a beloved parent.

I Remain in Darkness is a new high water mark for Ernaux, surging with raw emotional power and her sublime ability to use language to apprehend her own life’s particular music.

MY FAVE

This memoir is really the first memoir I’ve ever read and what a memoir to start off with. It ruined me completely, made me want to run to my mother and have her hold me like when I was a kid and pray, even though I’m not religious, that she wouldn’t forget me, and more importantly, wouldn’t subject me to the pain that is watching a parent slowly deteriorate. Earnaux is an amazing, fascinating woman and with her references of being a French communist and feminist, I plan on reading more of her and learning more about her.
