** This is an Era-Manga ** -This manga is rated 17+ for sensual material
A reimagined version of Video Girl Ai without the fantasy “video girl” lore attached.
This is a complicated story of adolescences to adulthood dealing with the real-world issues that young people deal with in regards to relationships especially in making decisions and understanding one’s moral compass. What’s right from wrong, good from evil… what are the boundaries and more importantly what does it take to find out your inner self.
There are many uncomfortable moments in this series which actuall makes this series exactly what it is. Suspense, situational confrontations, romance, understanding his feelings and hers… and yes, it will even use those “sensual” moments as a way to make the reader just as uncomfortable (or tries to) as the main character Itchitaka as he has to decide what to do, how to act, and why he wants what he wants.
I found this particular manga to be one of Masakazu Katsura’s personal best.
A good story ruined by explicit depiction of underage girls
Let me first say some good things about this Manga series. Masakazu Katsura has mastered the trope of the teenage high school crush story. I’’s is uncanny in how it reflects the common male going through adolescence. From the private fantasies to the awkward insecurity Itchitaka exudes around the girl he fancies, I’’s will likely prove quite the walk down memory lane for male readers. Despite what you see in the first few pages, this story isn’t all about fan service. There is a great deal of character development to be found. I”s is about a young man figuring out how to connect with a girl he wants to be with. On the one hand he is like most young men: seeking her as a sexual object and at the same time, yearns to have a meaningful relationship with her. How he fumbles through it all will make you laugh, cringe, and probably have you eagerly reaching for Volume 2 to see the next part of the story.
Having said that, as much as I enjoyed reading the story in my younger days, I can’t recommend this manga. There is a pervasive, inappropriate depiction of young women here. In my opinion the imagery descends to the level of soft-core porn and that’s really too bad considering how heartwarming and honest the story is. My 2 cents.
