Publisher Description
A country where the ground has not finished arriving.
Iceland is the one stretch of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that stands above water: a country sitting not on a tectonic plate but on the seam between two, being manufactured from below and torn apart from the sides at once. Ground arrives here on a schedule a person can watch. An island surfaced off the south coast in 1963. A town was half-buried in 1973 and its harbour improved by the lava that buried it. Another was emptied in a night in November 2023 and has not been reoccupied since.
The people are just as recent, and they know it. Iceland is the only country in Europe with no prehistory, nobody here at all until a documented decade in the ninth century, and the settlers wrote it down: a book naming the first four hundred and thirty landholders, an assembly founded in 930 with the law recited aloud from memory, and forty sagas in prose so plain that Europe would not manage it again for six hundred years.
From a lava field with a birthday to a gauging station in a desert nobody visits, Atlas Greaves travels a country where everything has a beginning you can point to, and nothing is finished.
