Jack Finnegan only has to worry about dealing with school bullies, suffering through detention with his homeroom teacher, and getting noticed by the girl of his dreams... at least until an army of evil aliens invade Earth. Suddenly, this teenage slacker finds himself at the center of a galaxy-spanning conflict - where the lives of everyone on the planet are in jeopardy, soldiers use Quantum Physics to become superheroes, and the enemy uses some mysterious form of magic to make themselves practically unstoppable.
The secret to ending the conflict and saving the universe may lie in a powerful ancient spaceship, which it seems can only be flown by Earthmen. Now, Jack and a rag-tag group of allies must overcome impossible odds, defeat an unkillable enemy, rescue the princess of the galaxy, and save the universe from a threat more terrifying than any it has ever faced.
Can this underachiever rise to the occasion and become the hero Earth needs? The fate of all life in the galaxy may rest in his hands.

A little bit of everything
I read this book and enjoyed it very much. The story and characters almost reminded me of just about every sci-fi movie I have every watched. Oh, that feels like Last Starfighter, and wasn’t that in Galaxy Quest? Reminds me of Guardians of the Galaxy, the Dark Crystal, Titan AE, Treasure Planet, and the list goes on. It was nice and unique to feel that way, but still have what appears a unique story. There are missing points at the end of this book, which I guess we need to hope will be resolved within the whole series. The only story line that I couldn’t resolve involved the space bugs and the final plan, by an evil genius robot. Except he wasn’t with the group when they encountered the bugs, unless he gained the knowledge from interfacing with the relic spaceship. I’m just not sure. I think I was hoping that Jack’s and Anna’s love for each other would solidify, instead of sounding like he had placed her into her princess role, and that was it. I felt he would notice her beauty, as he did in various situations, like a 15 year old boy should. But that’s what happens when a book invests you into the characters. There are many unknowns brought up in the story. And overall, I enjoyed this book very much. I highly recommend it to any sci-fi fan. You will have familiar flashes throughout the book. You will enjoy the characters.
I suggest this to everyone.
This book captured my attention right away and didn't let go. I couldn't put it down. I literally read it while eating my lunch and with my siblings watching the television in the same room. It took me about five hours to read but mark my words, someday this series of books will be a film series.
